A ‘hometown’ bar that truly makes you feel at home By Jillian Chandler
If you’re looking for a place in Sandpoint where you’ll be treated to an incredible experience of community, connection and comfort, paired with a great drink and some spectacular live entertainment, look no further than 219 Lounge.
Since 1937, the 219 Lounge has been in continuous operation, embracing all who come through the doors. Today, customers are welcomed by the warmth and the bones of this historic building; the inviting and cozy atmosphere that will most certainly make anyone feel at home. Over the years, the 219 has adapted with the times, yet throughout the changes, they’ve retained an atmosphere where everyone feels like they have a place in the 219.
Mix in the friendly and professional bartenders, a stop at “The Niner,” as it’s been coined over the years, is a Sandpoint experience that will keep you coming back for more. “In the last five years, the level of professionalism with the barkeeps and their skill has grown, while still maintaining each person’s own unique character,” shares Mark Terry, general manager. “You’re going to get quality service when you step foot in the bar, whether it’s for a drink during the afternoon or you’re out with friends to celebrate and listen to live music.”
At 219, they pride themselves in going out of their way to know their guests as people, not just customers. “Our staff members are the best! They are dedicated to our customers and to being true professionals,” affirms Mel Dick, owner. “You can’t be in business since 1937 without great staff and great customers.”
The customers of 219 represent everything the Sandpoint community is about: old-timers, newcomers, visitors, and from all walks of life, according to Mel. “They are looking for a place to chill, spend time with friends, listen and dance to great music, watch a game, or just sanctuary from the daily grind of life.”
While the bar is stocked with all the familiar whiskeys, vodkas, gins and tequilas, “you never know when we will have that special, seemingly impossible to find, bottle of great aged whiskey on hand,” smiles Mel, who also mentions that they have recently started to focus on special, intimate off-site events and parties like whiskey tastings and old-school cocktails from the 1800s to the 1970s.
During the warmer months (June through September), the 219 reopens their outside patio and stage, where guests will be treated to live music outside every Saturday night while enjoying the full-service outside bar. Mark is excited to share that they are working hard to bring in food trucks on the weekend as well—which would make a nice addition to the great music and drinks.
Everything they do at the 219 is to bring a sense of community, connection and comfort. “I hope customers—new and old—feel that,” notes Mark. “Every person is important to us.” 219 Lounge 219 N. 1st Ave. Sandpoint, ID 208.263.5673 219.bar
